An AEO Score is a single number that summarises how well your site is positioned for AI citation. It combines multiple signals into one measure. Here is what goes into an AEO Score and what each component tells you. For the full measurement system, read how to track AEO citations.
What an AEO Score Measures
Component 1: Schema Coverage
This measures how much of your site has the correct schema markup applied. Missing schema is one of the most common and most correctable AEO weaknesses.
Component 2: Content Citability
This measures how well your content is structured for AI citation. Does it follow the citable content formula? Do pages open with direct answers? Are FAQ sections present? Are subheadings descriptive?
Component 3: Entity Strength
This measures how clearly AI engines understand your digital identity. It includes identity consistency, citation density, schema coverage, and author authority. Read the full Entity Strength Score guide.
Component 4: Citation Rate
This is the direct measure of how often you are actually cited. Based on running a set of tracking queries across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and recording the results.
Component 5: Competitive Gap
This measures how your citation rate compares to your competitors on your key topics. Run a Citation Gap analysis to understand this component in detail.
Your AEO Score is a compass, not a destination. What matters is the direction of travel. An improving score means your strategy is working. A declining score means something needs attention.
How to Read Your Score
Look at each component separately as well as the overall score. A high overall score with a weak citation rate component tells you that your technical implementation is strong but your content is not yet driving citations. A high citation rate with weak schema coverage tells you that your content is doing well despite technical gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a universal AEO Score standard?
No. Different tools use different methodologies. What matters is consistency within the tool you use. Pick one tool, measure consistently, and focus on the trend.
Can I improve my AEO Score without creating new content?
Yes. Schema markup fixes, opening paragraph rewrites, FAQ additions, and NAP corrections all improve your score without creating new pages.
How does AEO Score relate to SEO metrics like Domain Authority?
They measure different things. Domain Authority measures the strength of your backlink profile for SEO. AEO Score measures your readiness for AI citation. They are complementary.
